Devil in the details: Kanji mnemonic illustrations

Iphone_detail

Japanese mask designs were the inspiration for this illustration (shown in cropped detail) for the mnemonic for Devil 鬼. I love the swirls, simple shapes, and bold colors of the eastern aesthetic.

3_joyo_2x

The jōyō kanji is the guide to kanji characters put together by the Japanese Ministry of Education. The list was recently revised to include an additional 196 characters and to remove 5 characters (勺, 銑, 脹, 錘, and 匁), for a total of 2,136.
The 196 additional characters are:

How I came to write Kanji Pictographix

When I first arrived in Japan in 1988 I rode the trains and made doodles that helped me learn the kanji on the signs. It was my way of trying not to get lost. I'd carry a stack of blank business cards and sketch with markers what I thought the kanji looked like. I had seen books that used visual mnemonics. They introduced a couple dozen or so kanji. It was a start. Over time my doodle cards grew to a thousand plus. After two years in the Japan I returned to the states, I bought a Mac, and wrote, designed, and illustrated the best selling book 'Kanji Pictographix'.
Now I'm working on an iPhone and iPad app that includes visual mnemonics for the full Japanese Ministry of Education Jōyō set of 2141 kanji. I've been working on the visuals for the past three years. I went back and redrew the 1,000 visuals from my book and created over a 1,000 new visuals as well.
In addition to my kanji book, I also wrote 'Kana Pictographix: Mnemonics for Japanese Hiragana and Katakana. My books are available at Amazon here.
Thanks for stopping by. Gambate.

Interesting comparison between Kanji Pictographix and the pictograms of the Beijing Olympics

Named "the beauty of seal characters" and with strokes of seal characters as their basic form, the Pictograms of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games integrate pictographic charm of inscriptions on bones and bronze objects in ancient China with simplified embodiment of modern graphics, making them recognizable, rememberable and easy to use. Skillfully using the effect of sharp contrast between the black and white colors which the typical Chinese traditional artistic form of rubbings have, the Pictograms of the Beijing Olympic Games display distinct motion character, graceful aesthetic perception of movement and rich cultural connotations, thus arriving at the harmony and unity of form with conception.
